Yearly Review - 2019

At the beginning of each year, we like to take stock of what happened in the world of Radical Honesty in the past 12 months, what we’re proud of and not so proud of, and what we're shooting for in the coming year.  Here’s what we came up with for 2019!

Radical Honesty in the Media

This has been a hell of a year for Radical Honesty in the media. “Radical Honesty” has officially seeped into the language of popular culture. Here are a few of our favorite media moments from this year:

  1. New Introduction Video (14 mins): We have an amazing new video introduction to Radical Honesty put together by our friend Tom over at Like Stories of Old. His work is a mashup of his introduction to Radical Honesty set against the backdrop of powerful movie moments and selections from the audiobook for Radical Honesty. This is a great way to share about Radical Honesty with your friends and family!

2. TEDx Talk (18 mins): Brad’s How to Get Over Shit and Be Happy TEDx talk from Cluj, Romania in 2015 has almost reached 1 million views on YouTube. If you haven’t seen it, check it out below:

3. ABC’s Stumptown: Radical Honesty made a strong appearance on ABC’s Stumptown! Two characters actually speak about Radical Honesty and share honestly with each other. Watch the clip here.

Moving Forward: We’re always looking for interesting opportunities where Brad can speak and introduce people to the practice of Radical Honesty. If you have a podcast or blog, get in touch and let’s get Brad on your calendar in 2020 and inspire even more people to get over shit and be happy.

Radical Honesty Resources

This year we focused on including more Radical Honesty voices in our newsletters and on our blog. Here are a few great selections from our Trainers:

Moving Forward: This year we’re creating specific guides to share with you about Radical Honesty and Sex, Couples, Parents, Parenting, Dating and more, while also continuing to share monthly articles from our Trainers, all in hopes of supporting you in being more boldly YOU in all of your relationships!

Radical Honesty Worldwide Workshops

Number of Workshops

This year, we saw a surge in the number of Radical Honesty workshops offered to the world.

In 2018, trainers led 49 multi-day workshops worldwide. In 2019, we increased that number to 78. We are so proud of the challenging work our Trainers are doing supporting others and themselves in noticing and living out loud together.

New(ish) Offerings

Radical Honesty Enterprises hosted the first official Advanced 8-Day Workshop in Florida led by Brad and Taber. The Advanced Workshop creates an opportunity for participants to deepen their practice without having to be on the Trainer path. Keep on an eye out for more of these is the future like this one being offered by Trainer’s Pete and Tuulia.

Brad also led the Life Planning workshop in Virginia for the first time in a decade. A group of friends gathered together to learn the life planning process, write out the purpose of their lives and then create a project list for this year. We’re are excited to add the life planning course to the Radical Honesty Menu of offerings in the coming years.

Where we can improve: Europe is really leading the charge in offering Radical Honesty workshops. We want to develop the Trainer community in the U.S. and then in South America and India so that our workshops are accessible to more people and it’s easier for you to make it to our events.

Moving Forward: We will be re-launching the 6-Week Radical Honesty Online course in the Spring. To get early notice when enrollment begins, click here. You’ll also see an expanded workshop calendar including more 8-Day Intensives and Residential Retreats than have ever been offered in a year- so, even more opportunities to free your mind and live out loud!

Radical Honesty Trainer and Trainer Candidate Community

Training

In 2019, we focused on clarifying our Trainer Candidate path for those who are interested in teaching the practice of Radical Honesty to others, and developing on-going support for our already certified Trainers. Here’s what we came up with:

  1. The Basic Trainer Candidate Path: Radical Honesty Training is not about marking to-dos off a checklist. It’s an embodied process that includes your own personal work, your contact and connection with the Trainer Candidate community, and your ability to lead groups in a powerful way. That said, we put together the basic milestones that you’ll want to meet if you are interested in becoming a certified trainer.

  2. Year 1 Online Training Course: This year we created the Online Training Course led by 7 different certified Radical Honesty Trainers with topics ranging from the roots of Radical Honesty, Trauma-informed coaching, asking for what you want, and more. We plan to run this course each year to support our Trainer Candidates on their path to becoming certified while deepening their personal practice at the same time.

  3. Monthly Supervision: In order to support the on-going work of our Trainers, Brad leads monthly supervision calls for Trainers to debrief and talk through specific workshop challenges with him and their Trainer peers. Thank you Brad!

  4. New Trainer: We certified a new trainer this year! Anna Haas lives and works in Europe and will be offering workshops, groups, and coaching this year. We are very proud of her commitment to the path and her continued practice. Take a look at her bio here.

  5. Hot Seat Workshop: Taber Shadburne, master trainer, led a much lauded workshop for advanced students in running hot seat work, a staple of Radical Honesty workshops. We hope that Taber will continue to run these workshops in the future!

Trainer Agreements

Over the course of a year, the Radical Honesty Trainer and Trainer Candidate community developed a set of agreements about what to do when a workshop participant and a workshop leader are attracted to each other and want to pursue a romantic and sexual relationship.

Then all Trainers and Candidates agreed to the agreements.

In the wake of #MeToo and the downfall of a number of communities due to sexual abuse allegations, we wanted to be pro-active and develop a transparent process of how to confront these issues.

During 2020, we will continue to have conversations in the Radical Honesty community about the challenging issues of power, attraction, and sex.

Radical Honesty Circle

Out of the Trainer Agreement process, we saw a need for a dedicated group of seasoned Radical Honesty Trainers to support trainers and participants in relationship issues, unfinished business, and grievances.

If you have a concern, you can write to us at support@radicalhonesty.com and read more here.

Moving Forward: Our Trainer Agreements and Radical Honesty Circle practice will most likely evolve over time as we continue to get feedback from our community and learn from each issue brought to the circle.

Radical Honesty Enterprises

Our mighty staff of four maintains the website, works to support our Trainers and Trainer Candidates, stays in touch with the community through newsletters and social media, and generally keeps the ship sailing with organizational and administrative work.

Part of our job is often being the top dog and maintaining the quality of our offerings. This year, we cleaned up rogue meetups led by untrained leaders and told untrained coaches who were using the trademark Radical Honesty to stop using it, join us, and learn what we mean by “Radical Honesty”.

Moving forward: In September, to celebrate his 80th birthday, Brad is planning to give the organization to the trainers. We are exploring a number of options to make this happen and are interested in worker’s co-ops, B-corps, and other forms of alternative, democratic, and mission-based arrangements.

Radical Honesty on Social Media

Sarah, our social media maven, has done a wonderful job keeping us abreast of all the new mentions of Radical Honesty, consistently posting valuable content to our social feeds, and supporting the marketing efforts of our Trainers to fill their workshops around the world.

If you don’t follow us, why not start adding honest, provocative, content to your feeds?

What we’re looking for...

Organizational Development: We’re looking for anyone who has been part of the transition or knows about transitioning to a B-Corp or worker’s co-op. If you do and could share with us your experience, email support@radicalhonesty.com

Editorial Intern: We’re looking for an editorial intern who would work with us for an 1-2 hours per week editing, proofreading our articles and newsletters.
