Living with purpose and clarity

Hey friends, Marvin here.

Reflecting now on my ten-year Radical Honesty trip, I imagine that working on my Life Purpose has been one of the most rewarding things I did. It really shifted things for me! Of course, getting in touch with my feelings was also very important for me. And to learn how to be honest.

But only through really figuring out what I stand for and what I actually want to do, I really moved my life into a new direction. And I avoided replaying the same loops. In my workshops, I often mention how important I find Life Purpose Work.

And not many of us like doing it!

In fact, most don’t.

A lot of people shy away from working out their purpose.

Or there is massive resistance flushed up once they begin.

I think a prime reason is this:

There are a lot of shitty and counterproductive ideas about purpose out there.

Purpose is often portrayed as something so big, definite, and final, it drains our energy just to think about it. Instead of it being a fun and creative process of connecting to our hearts, it seems like a heavy, new to-do list. More stuff on top of all the other shit we have to do already.

Or we think we SHOULD have a purpose, which inevitably brings up our resistance.

Well-meant advice like “just follow your purpose” often blocks us even more.

Truth is, most people don’t know what their purpose or passion is.

On top, we often confuse heroic stories with stories of real purpose. We are fed the struggling artist dramas, or tales of addicts who turned their life around. Or of people who persisted against all odds to FINALLY make their ONE dream happen!

These often are stories of madness, rather than stories of purpose.

As a rule of thumb: you can tell very little about a human’s inner feeling of alignment and purpose by looking at their outside achievement. Sadly, that’s what most people do. But purpose is a complete inside job that you do for the sake of doing you the way you want.

Real stories of purpose are often untold stories of silent contentment.

The Seriousness of a Child at Play

A life of genuine purpose is nothing reserved for a chosen few.

You don’t have to have different parents, a different story, or more money.

For this journey, you are exactly, one-hundred percent perfect the way you are.

Also, purpose does not at all mean violating your own uniqueness in the process.

The opposite is true: it’s the genuine journey of really embracing your past, your resources, even your neurosis. Owning and honoring the life you have been given. You don’t have to change. You can learn how to work in your favour. Waste less energy on trying to be different.

Purpose here is a flexible, living, breathing framework you get to play with.

That’s the key element here: Play!

Life does not have to be a drag. And we can maintain a playful, open, loving attitude despite of circumstances. See life as a celebration of love and being, not a drama to survive. It was Nietzsche who said: ‎”The struggle of maturity is to recover the seriousness of a child at play.”

Think Big, Act Now

Purpose is not just a lofty, far-out idea for some better future scenario.

Ideally, your purpose becomes an attitude or feeling in the present moment. You don’t even have to change what you are doing, you can just change how your are approaching it. And whatever purpose you might craft, it becomes a reality only through small actions. And any small action already carries the seed of your greater, overall purpose.

Here is an example:

Let’s say I have the big purpose to save humanity and bring great love and joy to everyone. I worked hard on this statement for two years. And I am very busy in my mind thinking about this future state. In fact, I am so busy, I snap at the cashier in the supermarket and get angry. I actually missed the moment to turn my purpose into a felt reality.

So yes, a big purpose statement can serve as a lighthouse, calling you forward.

And actual fulfillment is only possible now. We need to get into that habit, or we will not be able to actually enjoy any imaginary future scenario. Breathe. Feel. Relax.

Who should work with purpose?

I think that some ground-work is helpful to fully dive into purpose.

To me, this is any work that helps to detach from your personal story. As long as you are fully identified with your past, you might not have the energy available to design the future. Working out some of your past issues helps to free up space and energy. And, in the process, you might notice that you are already sitting on some great materials for genuine purpose work.

Your past personal pains, if felt and healed, can be transformed into great gifts.

But that can’t be done by thinking about it. It’s a bodily process of working through layers of unfelt emotions. And then reintegrating and redirecting this energy in your favour.

At the end of the day, we are always creating our lives already.

For most, this process is an unconscious recreation of the past. But we can turn this into a conscious act and really create a loving and fun future for ourselves and others.

Marvin and Anna’s Radical Honesty Life Purpose retreat

Join our next Life Purpose Retreat

Just in time to slowly fade-out 2023 and get ready for 2024, my dear friend and colleague Anna Haas and I are hosting a Life Purpose Retreat very close to Berlin this November 22-26 (in English). This will be a fantastic opportunity to dive into your Life Purpose and start to create a future of your own making.

It helps so much to do this process in an inspired group, over multiple days. There will be on-going support for you after that via a closed group. We will spend a lot of time working on resistances and challenges that might come up and help integrate conflicting parts.

And we will have a whole lot of fun in the process. In the evening, there is conscious play-time and sauna and you can jump straight into the lake, if you dare.

Feel the calling? Join us now.

You don’t need any previous experience with Radical Honesty to join for the journey!

Love,
Marvin
